Dr. John D. Ashby

For the past 49 years, Dr. John D. Ashby has been a steadfast donor to the hospital he served as an orthopedic specialist. He was 88 years old when he treated his last patient.

As both a physician and a major donor, Dr. Ashby has a special relationship to Chambersburg Hospital. In addition to decades of annual giving, he and his wife, Dorothy, donated their home and property in 1994 as a retained life estate.

Mrs. Ashby passed in 1999, but Dr. Ashby continues to live independently in his home located across the street from the Chambersburg Hospital. He will celebrate his 100th birthday in July 2017.

Dr. Ashby believes community residents have a responsibility to help keep their local hospitals strong and open to all. He feels the planned gift of his home is the ultimate reflection of his loyalty to his hospital and the patients it continues to serve.

UPDATE:  We lost a dear friend and colleague on June 6, 2017.  Just weeks from his 100th birthday, Dr. Ashby passed gently in his sleep.  Chambersburg Hospital will keep his memory alive by sharing the story of his generous spirit of philanthropy.
